"...I would have hoped for more."
After reading the well-written book description and knowing how much I enjoy the Desire line, I was slightly disappointed when I read The Boss's Demand. The first thing to hit me was that the quality/direction for this line must have changed since the last Desire I'd read, because The Boss's Demand reminded me more of the Harlequin Presents line...only not as good. Personally, I enjoy the more demanding hero (on occasion and if portrayed correctly) and I enjoy the secret baby scenarios as well, so I'm not sure what went wrong with this book. It just didn't ring true for me.
First off, you have the hero a hunky foreigner (or who I think is a foreigner because I never quite figured out where he was from...only that it had a desert). He's rich, he's muscular, and he's a bit too good to be true. Where's the flaws? He avoids women because his father hurt his mother by sending Elan away when he was younger? Okay, I must have missed something here. I didn't get the feeling Elan had a problem with women in general or one specifically or that he thought he might mistreat them. So why would he avoid any type of real relationship with one?
Then there's the heroine who's going to prove herself to a boss who's used to women throwing themselves at him. Of course, in typical fashion, she just can't resist him. He's too much to man for her. And, as if all that wasn't enough, Sara ends up pregnant and unsure if she's going to tell Elan about it.
Maybe I'm not seeing the big picture here, but there's everything but the kitchen sink in this book and it isn't even spiced up or twisted any to make it more believable or interesting. Where's the unpredictability? Where's the emotion that proves/shows why Sara can't resist Elan? Sexual attraction surely isn't all there is to this relationship? Frankly, there's only one last thing I'd like to say. For a debut novel, I would have hoped for more.
