"Reckless Engagement is definitely a Presents I plan to hang on to!"
In Daphne Clair's Reckless Engagement, Katrien Cromwell meets the man of her dreams (literally) at a fundraiser and feels an immediate and intense attraction to him. Zachary Ballantine is a mountaineer, recently returned from a mountain climbing expedition where his best friend died. The back-cover copy emphasizes the fake engagement between the characters, but that element of the book is only a small part of the overall story. To me, this is a book about overcoming fear.
Katrien is engaged when she meets Zachary, and although she tries to fool herself into believing Callum is the man she loves, she can barely fight the attraction she feels to Zachary. However, she has a great deal of common sense and self-respect, and she refuses to give in to her desires. When Zachary has an accident and she rushes to be by his side, she has to make many hard choices.
Katrien was a smart, engaging heroine, and this story was told strictly from her point of view. Katrien gained my respect because she never lost sight of her convictions, despite her strong desire for Zachary. I enjoyed the added tension of not knowing what was going on in Zachary's head, and I think Ms. Clair created a passionate, powerful character in Zachary Ballantine. By the end of the book, I felt as though I knew him as well as I knew Katrien.
